Episode Summary:

To give his beloved matchmaker Jess an unforgettable 30th birthday, superstar pitcher Ray pulls out all the stops with over-the-top surprises, from breakfast in bed to a dream meet-and-greet with her celebrity idol Courteney Cox. His string of thoughtful gestures stems from a place of genuine affection, as he hopes to win Jess's heart. At a romantic dinner capping off her incredible day, an emboldened Jess finally confesses her romantic feelings for Ray.

But Ray reluctantly rejects her advance, citing his imminent return to LA. Stung by the perceived rejection, Jess presses Ray to share the real reason he's holding back. After stalling, Ray drops a devastating bombshell - he previously sabotaged Jess's budding relationship with her neighbor Morgan out of jealousy. Ray shamefully admits to paying off Morgan to leave town so he could have Jess all to himself.

Though Ray professes his enduring love, a shattered Jess banishes him from her life forever, unable to move past his betrayal. His elaborate birthday ruse to manipulate her feelings has backfired catastrophically. Jess is left questioning if any of Ray's kindness was authentic, or simply a means to an end. His desperate ploy to keep her from romantic happiness has cost him her trust and destroyed their bond.

A tearful Jess orders a heartbroken Ray to leave, no longer able to stand the sight of him after such a monumental deception. As he reluctantly gathers his bags with a final profession of love, the sound of Jess's anguished sobs fills the air. Ray faces a future without his soulmate, all because of his own selfish actions. His elaborate scheme to have Jess all to himself has ended in tragedy, severing their connection perhaps permanently. On this somber, emotional note, a defeated Ray walks away from the dream life he sabotaged with his own hands.
