Speaker 1: Welcome to the Get Up and CODE Podcast with your host John Sonmez. The only podcast that combines fitness and programming and does it in less time than it takes to finish your workout.
John: Hey everyone, welcome back to Get Up and CODE. I’m your host John Sonmez and today I have a really interesting guest Charlie Olson who is basically someone who has set up a strongman competition for programmers and we’ll talk about that in a little bit here but before I do get into that I do want to take a chance to thank the sponsor for this podcast which is now Zephyr. If you’re not familiar with Zephyr they’re a great test management solution. They’re really involved in Agile community in general. You can actually download Zephyr’s free community edition which is good for up to 10 users which can help you to manage your tests, to do test management. It integrates with JIRA. It’s just got a lot of really good features in there. I’ve used it myself. You can get that at zephyragile.com, that’s Zephyr, zephyragile.com.
Anyway, thanks to Zephyr and without further ado I’d like to welcome Charlie Olson to the show. Welcome Charlie.
Charlie: Hi, glad to be here.
John: Charlie, tell everyone a little bit about yourself and your background.
Charlie: Currently I’m a tech engineer or software engineer at Raven Studios in Madison, subsidiary of Activision and I guess one of the World’s Mightiest Programmer Competition started out over at Human Head Studios also in Madison so my background is in video games primarily and web development also, but currently I’m in video games.
John: That’s cool. I always wanted to get involved in video game development. What is it like? What languages do you program in and what games have you worked on?
Charlie: Right now I’m working on Call of Duty Online in China. It’s not available in the United States. It’s a PC only thing. It’s pretty huge but we use—so we’re using Call of Duty engine which is mainly C, C++ and then I do a good amount of web development related to that and primarily using PHP and JavaScript for that. Game development there’s still a lot of C, C++ out there.
John: Yep, yep, okay. That’s interesting. Call of Duty you said online but it’s only available in China? It’s for the China market?
Charlie: Yeah, there’s—yeah, it might be worth googling I guess rather than me giving the whole spiel. I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say exactly other than that’s what we’re working on. That’s public knowledge, so.
John: Oh okay, okay. Oh yeah, I’ll have to look that up. It just seems interesting to me just because China and then—being a communist country and then playing as American soldiers …
Charlie: Yeah, there are some modifications to the game. There are some YouTube videos of it but I don’t know how current. It is pretty cool. I don’t know if I’m the one to talk about it in detail but there’s definitely information out there on the internet.
John: Okay, yeah, I’ll definitely have to check that out. It sounds pretty interesting. I’ve always been a fan of Activision all the way back since Pitfall! Tell me a little bit about this—I was talking to another guest on the show Jesse Taber and he had mentioned this WiMP Strongman Competition and I was like, “Wow, that’s perfect” I was getting ready to book tickets and go out there because it sounds like a perfect competition but unfortunately I saw that you weren’t putting it on this year,
