Speaker 1: Welcome to the Get Up and CODE Podcast with your host John Sonmez. The only podcast that combines fitness and programming and does it in less time than it takes to finish your workout.
John: Hey, welcome to another episode of Get Up and CODE. This will be episode 102 and in this episode I thought I would talk to you a little bit about routines and how to split them up and whether or not it’s better to do a full body routine or a split routine when you’re lifting weights. I know this has been a topic of some confusion for a lot of people out there so I thought I’d try to clarify what are the differences and when you might do one or the other and the drawbacks and tradeoffs and what people are saying. This is definitely something that’s highly debated for a long time. Even a lot of professional bodybuilders had debated this for a while although I think most professional bodybuilders today are probably doing split routines.
Before we get into that also just wanted to give you an update, I am still in Ireland here at the time of recording this. By the time you’re listening to it I won’t be. I should be probably in Amsterdam but I’ve been sick the last few days but I wanted to give you an update on what I’ve been doing here.
I’ve had a lot of success with getting a gym membership in Ireland while I’ve been here. I’ve been working out pretty much every other day hitting the gym doing actually full body workouts in fact that’s why I thought to talk about this episode topic was because this is something different for me. I’ve been doing split routines for a very, very long time. But I’ve been having a lot of success. It’s been working out really well. I’m finally getting into that routine of running and lifting even though I’m traveling. It’s definitely difficult and there’s going to be some disruption here as I’m going to be heading on an airplane to go to Bruges for a few days before I hit Amsterdam but I will try to make sure that I get back on it and just do the best that I can is what I’m learning on this trip.
Anyway, let’s discuss basically what is the difference here. It’s pretty obvious I guess but just to give an adequate definition, a full body workout would be if you go into the gym to lift weights and you pretty much hit everything. You’re trying to hit all the body parts so you’re going to do bench press and squats and deadlifts and shoulders, multi presses and pretty much all the major muscle groups. You’re going to hit them all at once.
A split routine can mean a variety of different things but it just means that you’re not doing a full body work out all at once. You might be splitting things up. There’s lots of different ways to do a split. I’ve talked about in some early episodes about doing like an upper body and lower body split that’s probably a 2-day split, probably the most common one. You can do some kind of a 3-day split where maybe you’re doing back and biceps and something else on one day and chest and triceps on another day and legs on another day and throwing in the shoulders into one of those workouts. That’s what I’ve done a lot in the past. You can do 4 and 5-day splits where you’re getting down even further.
Why would you choose one of these over the other and which one is more beneficial overall? I guess it kind of comes down to a few things. Some of this is kind of theoretical and then remember you’ve always got to test things out and do what works for you because even though a lot of things theoretically should be the best or this should work it doesn’t necessarily work that way.
