John:               Hey, welcome back to another episode of Get Up and CODE. Today I’m going to be talking about bulking and cutting. I’ve talked about this a little bit before but I’ve been getting a lot of questions around this and I thought I’d give kind of my recommendations of when you should do them and what exactly they are and some of the things—pitfalls that you might run into when trying to do this.
Before we get into that though I want to give you a little bit of an update here. This will be a little bit time shifted here since I am travelling and I’m trying to get a couple of episodes recorded ahead of time, but I’m in Amsterdam now. If you’ve been following my progress from when I first left for Paris and then went to Berlin and then I just had a short stay in Bruges but I am in Amsterdam—or Ireland, I totally forgot Ireland. Anyway, I had basically been lifting in Berlin, found a gym there that was great. I got a gym membership in Ireland as well and kept up with that and running pretty well. I got really sick at the end of my Ireland trip and then didn’t really do anything in Bruges. I was only there for 3 days.
Now I’m in Amsterdam and I still haven’t gotten back into it yet. Had a lot of rain and storms here so I need to get back into it, get that motivation going again. It’s only been really about a week, but I feel bad already not lifting, not running but I’m going to try tomorrow morning to get out there and get to a gym and get a membership going.
One of the things I’ve kind of iterated on this—reiterated I guess on this whole trip is just this learning that you’ve got to make the most of it and it’s never going to be perfect especially when you’re travelling but you can’t just let everything slip. Whatever you can do to keep things going, to keep your situation improving or at least to reduce the damage that you do the better it is. That’s kind of what I’m operating in. I realize that everything is not going to be perfect and I’m still doing what I can. Hopefully that gives you some motivation and encouragement if you’re in a similar situation. When you’re traveling or when you have to break your diet for some reason or you break your routine it’s not the end of the world. Don’t just give up. Don’t just say, “Oh, heck with it!” See what you can do. What can you do everyday? Even those little things are going to count and make a difference.
One other side note that I’ve noticed from this is I’ve thought about going on hiatus and saying, “Okay, well, I’m just not going to lift or run maybe for some period or time or maybe I’ll just tone this down.” I feel so much better when I’m in a routine, when I’m doing this. I feel good about myself when I’m eating right. That alone is worth it. It’s not just the guilt factor, it’s just a feeling in general. I definitely have learned that on this trip. That’s definitely been good to learn about myself.
Now let’s get into the main subject here which is this bulking and cutting. I’ve talked about this a little bit before, but essentially what is bulking and what is cutting. Bulking and cutting it’s basically—bulking is when you’re eating an excess of calories in order to gain muscle or gain strength, right? Cutting is opposite, so when you’re eating less calories than you burn in a day with the idea of typically losing fat. I don’t think anyone’s cutting to lose muscle, although maybe for a movie role or something.
