Speaker 1: Welcome to the Get Up and CODE Podcast with your host John Sonmez. The only podcast that combines fitness and programming and does it in less time than it takes to finish your workout.
John: Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode of Get Up and CODE. I finally have a guest on the show. I know you’ve been tired of hearing me ramble on about whatever I’m talking about as I’m traveling through Europe. This is going to be an interesting one. I have a buddy of mine who—Adrian who I’m in the Mastermind group with and he happens to be a CrossFitter and training for—doing some pretty interesting training for CrossFit. I thought this would be interesting. If you’ve been listening to some episodes of Get Up and CODE you know that I’ve been kind of not so sure about CrossFit but I’m open and willing to try it so I thought of brining Adrian on and just talk about CrossFit in general and what he’s been doing, so welcome to Get Up and CODE Adrian.
Guest: Oh thank you John. It’s great to be here.
John: Why don’t you give a little, yeah, short intro about yourself.
Guest: Yeah. I work in computer science. I have a PhD in computer science with a focus in computer vision and machine learning. I basically write code that enables computers to understand the contents of an image. The last time you uploaded a profile picture to Facebook it was probably able to not only detect the presence of your face but it was also most likely able to recognize you and tag you in the image. That’s a form of face recognition, face detection and it’s a really good example of how computer vision is being used in the real world. Computer vision is around you whether you realize it or not and it’s used for surveillance, for security reasons, for nabbing your license plate when you’re speeding too fast on the highway and even in Facebook and Twitter.
That’s a type of software that I develop but I’m also a very, very active person in the fitness world. I love fitness and I love staying active and I truthfully believe that if I was not active and if I did not workout there’s no way in the world I would have been able to finish my PhD and there’s certainly no way in the world I’d be able to do the type of work that I do now.
John: Interesting. Okay, cool. That’s actually a good talking point to discuss because I’ve talked about this a little bit before in the past, but it’s interesting to hear you call it out to say like that you wouldn’t be able to accomplish the things that you had accomplished if you weren’t being fit. Explain that a little bit. I think I know what you’re saying but I think a lot of people don’t really make this connection so it’s interesting that you brought it up here.
Guest: It’s really interesting. When I was growing up my mother used to tell me life is all about balance and if you can’t strike a good balance between your work and your play time and your family and friends that you’re going to be miserable and you’re going to be burned out. As a naïve little teenager I thought my mom was absolutely full of it and that there was no way this motherly advice could possibly be true.
By the time I got to college I realized that it partially was true. If you focused too much on your academic studies you don’t go to parties and you don’t hangout with new people and meet new people and have those wonderful college experiences. Similarly if all you do is go to parties and drink and get drunk and eat tons of pizza well then your body is going to deteriorate pretty quickly and once your body starts to deteriorate so does your mind.
