広い中国にはさまざま都市や村があり、長い歴史の中でそれぞれが独自の文化を育んできました。
その中でも、特に際立った特長を持つものは世界遺産に登録され、美しい景観が今もなお大切に残されています。

運河沿いにある江蘇省の蘇州には明・清代、その財力を背景に多くの中国式庭園が作られました。最盛期には200以上あったといわれるそれらの庭園の内、現在も数十カ所が現存しています。
最大規模を誇る拙政園せっせいえんや、多種多様な建築物がある留園りゅうえん、小規模ながら古典庭園の代表作である網師園もうしえんなど、全部で9カ所の庭園が世界遺産に登録されています。

1999年まではポルトガルの領地だったマカオ半島。その中心地は中国と西洋が融合した町並みが広がり、「マカオ歴史市街地区」として世界遺産に登録されています。
マカオという地名の由来ともいわれる「媽閣廟まかくびょう」は、海の神である媽祖が祀られているお堂で、500年以上の歴史があります。西洋文化が色濃く反映された建築物も多く、17世紀に建てられ、現在は壁面のみが残る「聖ポール天主堂跡」はその代表例です。
